Beyond the Runway: Story of the Versatile Model Sheena Osman
In a world where beauty is linked to appearances only, and models are always perceived as mannequins, Sheena Osman stands out as a defying force by creating a meaningful impact on society while gracing the runways. Crowned as Ms. Canada Nation Universe 2023, Sheena began her journey into the fashion world at a very tender age. In an exclusive question-answer session, Sheena revealed:
“I have been modeling since I was a pre-teen. I was always shy and timid as a child and was looking for an outlet to express myself.”
This constructive time inspired her to dream bigger and she started following the journeys of supermodels like Tyra Banks. As a young girl, Sheena was always passionate about fashion and dreamt of gracing the big magazines and TV shows. This passion drew her to modeling, and it became her creative outlet to overcome shyness and gain self-confidence.
She further shared that the modeling industry has evolved over the years, in such a way that being a model is much more than promoting the products or showcasing looks.
“We now see models advocating for different causes, using their brand to bring awareness to various issues,” Sheena expressed.
She is of the view that the runway industry’s evolution is mainly due to the social media presence and it has become a major escalator in promoting inclusivity. The fashion industry has spread awareness among the people by promoting diversity, including plus-sized models, individuals with disabilities, and representing a broader spectrum of ethnicities. However, there are still many things that need to change, she acknowledged.
When asked about her title; Ms. Canada Nation Universe, Sheena showed commitment to using it for her growth in the industry.
“I will represent my title while modeling […] and get involved with the organizers of fashion shows to promote my title at the event” -she shared.
She plans to become a brand ambassador for different brands, utilizing her years of experience as a promotional model. Her other passions include acting, hosting, and singing. When asked about her plans for the next five years, she shared:
“I see myself in a senior-level HR role within the Government of Canada,”
She has the desire and capability to mentor others, regarding career choices, and her talent for public speaking extends her goals towards initiating self-development programs for people in the entertainment industry.
Sheena further shared that her platform as Ms. Canada Nation Universe concentrates on bringing attention to social seclusion among seniors, a critical issue usually overlooked. Her position as a Benefits Officer with Employment and Social Development Canada has made her understand the challenges faced by seniors, an important matter often disregarded in Canada. She intends to volunteer with the Ontario Friendly Calls Program, showing support and social interaction to elders, and addressing the destructive effects of social isolation.
Ambitions are limitless for Sheena, who visualises herself striding the stages of the world’s most popular fashion events, including Lakme Fashion Week in India, Pakistan Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Week, and the renowned Super Chic Fashion Week events.
Sheena is confined to shattering stereotypes associated with pageantry. She seeks to dispel the concept that pageants devalue and objectify women. Rather she emphasizes that pageants build confidence, and character, and advocate for influential causes. Sheena acknowledges that pageants have evolved from just being beauty contests to offering networking prospects and lifelong friendships with like-minded, ambitious women.
Beyond the fashion industry, she has worked on a prominent cruise line as a host/emcee and performer, trekking throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and South America.
Sheena Osman illustrates the exemplary model – one who graces runways as well as aspires to make the world a better place. With her unyielding resolution, Sheena is poised to leave a lasting impression on the modeling industry and society as a whole.
