Two-time Latin Grammy winner Jonathan (Jonny) Maia has garnered domestic and international recognition for his sound engineering and music production. He has worked with some of Brazil’s most famous artists and helped produce the sound for musical shows.

After a lifetime raised among musicians, there was no other career choice for Jonny Maia. His musical journey started at age five and has grown to include two Latin Grammys and an impressive list of famous collaborators. He also spent ten years working as a recording/monitor engineer on various entertainment programs, which were nominated for and received multiple awards.

Getting an early start

Jonny Maia plays numerous instruments, but his musical career started long before becoming a professional. He said his parents eventually got a loan from the bank to build a home studio in a bedroom of their Rio de Janeiro apartment—where he said his career as a sound engineer and music producer was born.

“Through what my parents did for me, I was able to travel and get to know almost all of Brazil, and now I get to know the world, taking my music,” Jonny Maia said. “Family is the basis of everything, and I am very grateful to God for my family.”

He has worked hard to leverage raw talent and the available opportunities to forge a successful career. Though he has received numerous awards for his work and featured alongside some of Brazil’s best, Jonny Maia stays humble.

“I had the opportunity to work and tour with artists like Hiatus Kaiyote, Tai Verdes, Gflip, Jake Scott, Anitta, Rodrigo Amarantes, Sergio Mendes, Seu Jorge, and many more,” Jonny Maia said. “I’m currently living in the United States, improving my musical talent by surrounding myself with the industry’s best artists.”

Jonny Maia’s work as an entertainment recording engineer for musical programs like The Voice Brazil, The Voice Kids, Super Star, and Pop Star helped him build a successful reputation and allowed him to work with some of Brazil’s most recognizable talent in the studio.

Continuing to learn and grow

Jonny Maia said being able to work with first-rate professional equipment early in his career drew his attention to the limitations of many churches where he worked as a sound engineer. He began writing an introductory audio booklet, which helped these locations improve their sound quality within their means.

“The first years were challenging and equally essential for my training,” Jonny Maia said. “As soon as I started at the station, I came across a lot of sound equipment that I had never seen before; it was an amusement park for me.”

Since moving to the United States, he has dedicated himself to learning and growing professionally. Jonny Maia has been working to develop his abilities in the studio while taking masterclasses at Capitol Studio, East-West, and NRG to expand his skill set.

“Anyone interested in recording and music production can set up their own studio, with a reasonable starting capital,” Jonny Maia said, giving hope to future music producers everywhere. “Believe in yourself. Make your sound.”

Conclusion

Jonny Maia plans to continue his work in the studio as a mixing engineer, producing and composing music. To learn more about him, visit his website or reach out on social media at Instagram
